Freezing rain and heavy snowfall have hit Guelph, prompting a critical city-wide alert: No on-street parking is permitted. This is a heads-up for all residents!
City officials have declared a 'significant weather event' due to the recent and expected accumulation of ice and snow. This means immediate changes to daily routines, starting with where you park your car.
According to a Wednesday morning announcement on the city's website, on-street parking is suspended. The city urges everyone to move their vehicles off the streets until the weather event concludes.
"A significant weather event impacts our standard levels of service – which are typically one day for roads, three days for sidewalks – after the weather event is over and operations have returned to normal." This means that the city's ability to maintain roads and sidewalks will be affected. Typically, roads are cleared within one day and sidewalks within three days after the weather event ends and normal operations resume.
Similar declarations have been made in nearby communities, highlighting the widespread impact of the weather.
The city anticipates snowfall throughout the day and into New Year's Eve. City crews are prepared to work continuously in the coming days to clear snow from roads, bike lanes, and sidewalks. Residents can track the progress of city plows to stay informed about road conditions.
But here's where it gets controversial... Guelph residents are also encouraged to take proactive steps to prevent flooding. This includes checking storm drains near their properties and clearing them of any debris that could impede the flow of storm water and melting ice.
Fortunately, waste collection services remain on schedule, and all recreation facilities are operating as usual.
